Health and Safety Matters
Every day around the world, 6,300 employees lose their lives due to work-related illnesses or accidents, which equates to more than 2.5 million deaths per year. These incidents have negative effects on both national economies and employers. Costs are divided into visible costs—such as hospital expenses, compensation and legal fees—and invisible costs, which are often greater. Invisible costs include labour losses, machine downtimes, loss of production, motivation problems among employees and damage to company image Recognizing these challenges, ISO published ISO 45001:2018 to revise the OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System standard and address these issues
ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S) management systems. It was developed to align with the revised ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards (both updated in 2015) and was published in March 2018. The standard:
Supports legal and regulatory compliance by helping organizations identify and meet applicable occupational health and safety requirements in their operating jurisdictions.
Follows ISO’s Annex SL high-level structure (10 clauses), making it compatible with other management system standards and easier to integrate with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
Adopting ISO 45001 demonstrates an organization’s commitment to employee well‑being and enhances global credibility, compliance and competitiveness in today’s safety‑conscious marketplace
