Introduction
The new ISO 9001:2026 is getting closer. The sixth edition of the international quality management systems standard is currently in the publication phase, and ISO expects it to replace ISO 9001:2015 in September 2026.
For organizations currently certified, the new edition does not appear to represent a break from the familiar management model. The structure and fundamentals of ISO 9001 remain the same, but the revision seeks to adapt the standard to organizations’ evolving needs, reinforcing aspects related to leadership, quality culture, risk and opportunity management, and current business expectations.
The question for companies will not only be knowing what changes in ISO 9001:2026. It will also mean determining how those changes affect their management system, and what evidence they will need to demonstrate during future certification audits.

Key Changes in the New ISO 9001:2026
When will ISO 9001:2026 be published?
ISO currently indicates September 2026 as the expected publication date for the sixth edition.
The revision process is currently at Stage 60.00 – International Standard under publication, following the completion of the FDIS approval phase. The new edition will replace ISO 9001:2015 and its Amendment 1:2024.
Organizations certified to ISO 9001:2015 will have a transition period to migrate to the new edition. ISO confirms that this transition period will exist, though organizations should follow the official communications for the definitive details on how it will apply.
What are the main changes in ISO 9001:2026?
ISO describes the new edition as an evolution of the current quality management system. It brings clearer requirements and greater adaptation to today’s business context.
Among the areas organizations should begin to analyze, the following stand out:
1. Greater emphasis on leadership and quality culture
Quality continues to move away from the idea of being the sole responsibility of the quality manager.
The new edition reinforces the role of leadership, accountability, and quality culture, seeking more effective involvement from top management and genuine integration of quality within the organization. This is one of the changes ISO explicitly highlights for ISO 9001:2026.
From the perspective of a future audit, having a policy or a formal structure in place will not be enough. The organization will need to provide evidence of how its commitment to quality translates into decisions, priorities, and behaviors.
2. Digitalization and information management
Digital transformation has profoundly changed the way organizations manage their processes, information, evidence, and knowledge.
Cloud systems, automation, artificial intelligence, collaborative platforms, and new management tools are already part of daily operations for many organizations.
For this reason, when reviewing their management system under ISO 9001:2026, companies should assess whether their current approach to information management still fits today’s technology. It should also guarantee the necessary availability, reliability, and control.
3. Greater clarity on risks and opportunities
Risk-based thinking was already one of the fundamental elements of ISO 9001:2015.
The ISO 9001:2026 edition brings greater clarity to how organizations address risks and opportunities — one of the aspects ISO explicitly identifies among the revision’s key updates.
This may lead organizations to review how they identify risks and determine opportunities. It also means integrating both elements into planning and decision-making.
The goal should not simply be having a risk matrix in place. Organizations must demonstrate that relevant risks and opportunities genuinely influence how they manage their system.
4. Supply chain and business environment
Today’s supply chains are more complex, global, and vulnerable to disruption than they were a decade ago.
Dependence on critical suppliers, outsourcing, availability of raw materials, technology, and logistics can directly affect an organization’s ability to consistently deliver products and services. Geopolitical changes add another layer of risk.
For this reason, reviewing the management system for ISO 9001:2026 is a good opportunity to reassess controls over external suppliers. It also helps confirm the organization’s ability to maintain quality amid supply chain disruptions.
5. Sustainability and climate change
Climate change is already part of the ISO 9001 framework, and this continues under ISO 9001:2026.
In February 2024, ISO published ISO 9001:2015/Amd 1:2024 – Climate action changes. This amendment explicitly requires organizations to determine whether climate change is relevant to their management system, and notes that interested parties may have climate-related requirements.
Therefore, organizations should avoid interpreting this aspect as an issue exclusively tied to ISO 14001.
Within a quality management system, climate change can be relevant in several ways — for example, when it affects suppliers, raw materials, facilities, logistics, service continuity, customer requirements, or operating conditions.
What does ISO 9001:2026 mean for already-certified companies?
A company currently certified to ISO 9001:2015 will not have to start from scratch.
The publication of the new edition is essentially an opportunity to review the existing system and identify differences from the new requirements. Organizations can then make the necessary adjustments during the transition period.
ISO specifically recommends taking advantage of the revision to verify that the system continues to meet the needs of the organization, its customers, and other interested parties.
An orderly preparation could begin with:
- Understanding the final requirements of ISO 9001:2026
- Carrying out a gap analysis against the current system
- Identifying the affected processes
- Updating the system where necessary
- Training staff on and communicating the relevant changes
- Verifying implementation through internal audit
- Reviewing the effectiveness of the changes before undergoing the certification transition
What will an ISO 9001:2026 audit look for?
This will probably be one of the most important questions for organizations.
An ISO 9001 certification audit does not simply consist of checking that the organization has updated its procedures or documentary references.
The auditor will need to obtain objective evidence showing whether the organization has effectively implemented the applicable requirements within its management system.
For this reason, under ISO 9001:2026 it will be especially important to distinguish between two things: incorporating a requirement into the system, and demonstrating that the requirement is genuinely part of how the organization works.
Organizations can find this evidence in their processes, management decisions, indicators, records, interviews, operational controls, supplier management, treatment of risks and opportunities, and results.
When should a company start preparing?
There is no need to prematurely rebuild the management system or introduce changes based solely on preliminary interpretations.
However, it is reasonable to follow the publication of ISO 9001:2026 and begin planning the transition analysis.
Once ISO publishes the final edition, organizations will be able to compare their current systems against the new requirements. They can then precisely determine which adaptations are necessary.
Anticipating this analysis makes it possible to spread the effort across the transition period. This also helps avoid concentrating changes right before an audit.
RoyalCert and the transition to ISO 9001:2026
At RoyalCert, as an international certification body, we will continue to provide updates on ISO 9001:2026 as it develops. We’ll also cover the transition process and any aspects that may affect certified organizations.
Our goal is for organizations to clearly understand what is changing, when it is changing, and how it will affect the certification process.
Organizations should not understand the new ISO 9001 simply as a documentary update.
It is an opportunity to reassess whether the quality management system remains effective and is genuinely integrated into the organization. It should also continue to build trust with customers and other interested parties.
